Punk Island FAQ
Why are submissions open before we announce the date of the actual festival?
While we apply for our date and permit with the NYC Parks Department annually, we aim for the fest to take place traditionally during the summer. In the past we’ve done the summer solstice. Now we’re a little bit more flexible in when we do it. While we do work to get approval for our date early in the process, unfortunately we are at the mercy of how quickly the Parts Department wants to approve requests. For the most part there are things that take priority for them over us. So to stay on track we plan our fest ongoingly throughout the year with the hopes that we will have the date we want selected by the Parks Department and approved. And as soon as we get that approval we let everybody know ASAP.
I’ve submitted to perform at Punk Island every year. Why haven’t I been picked yet?
Every year, Punk Island receives hundreds of submissions from performers. We’re very grateful that you’re interested in playing the fest. It is very overwhelming to go through everything, and all of the organizers try to individually go through submissions see what you have to say and obviously hear your music. While we've added stages to keep growing since 2022, we only have a limited number of spots at each stage. Our collective is made up of many members who each give their input to decide which band to add to their specific stage. As a group we’re always looking for new bands to play Punk Island and encourage you all to submit.
For bands, how do I know if I was selected to play Punk Island?
Each stage manager will contact you via email if you are selected. Unfortunately due to the overwhelming number of applicants, we can’t reach out to everyone. But we’re still thankful you took the time to apply. It’s just a little bit quicker to contact people we’re going to be working with throughout the summer and getting ready for our fest.
How do you make Punk Island happen every year?
Punk Island is a collective of artists, musicians, curators and community organizers who work year round to plan the festival annually. We are solely a volunteer based group who donate our time and labor to produce this music and zine festival. We really rely on our community to help sustain the festival through donations. The funds raised from our benefit shows are used to cover the cost needed to produce the festival and keep it free for all.
